Rochdale's Nathan Stanton scored a late own goal to hand Milton Keynes their fourth straight win to put them second.
Dons' Lee Harper had earlier given Rochdale the lead with an own goal when William Mocquet's drive hit the post and went in off the keeper's back.
Harper atoned by saving a fierce shot from Callum Warburton and Izale McLeod then equalised with a low shot.
Stanton's error then cost Dale a point as he knocked Scott Taylor's flick over keeper Matthew Gilks from 20 yards out.
